What is Rosin?
Rosin, a solid resin derived from pine trees and various plants, comes in a semi-transparent form, ranging in colour from yellow to black. When applied to the bow hair, it enhances grip on the strings, facilitating clearer and resonant tones. Dark rosin tends to be heavier and stickier while light rosin tends to be lighter in density and stickiness.
How to Apply Rosin
Hold the rosin in your left hand, placing the bow hair on the cake toward the frog. Apply the rosin evenly by moving the bow across its surface, starting from the frog and progressing toward the tip.
Frequency of Rosin Application
Ideally, rosin your bow every four to six hours or two to three times per week. The frequency depends on your playing habits and the type of rosin used. If you notice clouds of rosin, you’re applying too much. Inconsistent or transparent sound during bowing signals insufficient or uneven application.
Post-Playing Care
After playing, use a soft cloth to wipe excess rosin from your instrument and bow. Place a cloth between the stick and hair to clean the rosin off the underbelly of the stick.
